Google Play (Android Market) + Chrome Web Apps

Today Google added Play to their toolbar.


Also, if you haven’t noticed they changed the Android Market to Google Play. I think the UX still needs some more work.

The reality is the majority of people on Google.com don’t have an Android device. So by adding a tab that’s apps are only for Android is quite limiting. If they are integrating books, movies & Android apps then users should also see Chrome Web Apps. For example, if I’m on an app’s page (like Evernote) I should be able to choose if I want to download the app to my browser or to my device. If they do this I would like to see them open the browser web apps up to other browsers as well (i.e. firefox). 

I also think the experience should be completely personalized and it should be extremely changed based on what device/browser you are accessing it from. However, that is a much longer post that I will save for a later date.

All marketing should add value in&of itself

1st of concept series inspired by theArtofMarketing


Mitch Joel says that all marketing should add some utility. If we want consumers to engage with us, we need to add value. However, this is not limited to just product value. If you take away any product value, marketing should still add its own value. Whether that be utility, educational value or entertainment value. The real test is if you take away any form of making money and it is still valuable.

Eric Ryan says we should create something that is beautiful on the shelf and in the home, something people want to display. This translates directly to marketing. If you are going to make a billboard, make it valuable enough that bystanders want to take a photo of it and share it.
